My paternal grandfather lived with us for a short period after his wife died. He was peeling the beans in the kitchen. I painted him quickly using some nearby cardboard. I'd have been about 11 or 12 years old.

I studied the piano from the time I was 10 until I left school at 17. Our piano was a beautiful but very loud Ronisch. I would have been around 13 years when I painted this.

The practical component of the Visual Arts exam for the school certificate required students to produce a painting within 60 minutes in response to a given title. I was in Year 10 so would have been around 15 years.
